Dot .Info Domain Names, Expiring and Deleting Domains: Dec. 3, 2006

What changed is the growing dominance of Google and search engines in general, and the increasing importance of Search Engine Optimization (SEO). Many websites today aren't as concerned about branding a name as they are about getting traffic. Having a strong and related top-level domain name (TLD) helps in a site's search engine ranking.

Another thing that has changed is the growth of the domain marketplace, and the trade and speculation in domain names themselves. As the Internet grows, so will grow the value of domain names, as the supply is limited.

I usually don't look at dot-info domain names for investment purpouses, and my original belief about their value compared to dot-com domain names still holds true. But the premium dot-info domain names can certainly see some good price appreciation. In the TRAFFIC 2006 domain name auctions, two of the top-selling dot-info domains that sold were: blogs.info ($6,000) and freedom.info ($1,180). Compared to the dot-com, dot-net, dot-org and even the dot-mobi domain names, however, dot-info domain name values are quite low.

That's not to say that I wouldn't enter the dot-info market at all. There are some domain names on today's expiring domain names list that I would consider as premium dot-info domains worthy of a strong bid—particularly photographs.info and possibly tommy.info (it sounds good!).
