Typo Domain Names and Top Domains Deleting Dec. 2, 2006
Today's list of deleting domain names contains quite a few typo domains, or fat-finger domains (a similar phenomenon is fat-finger dialing for phone numbers). Use of typo domain names is commonly called "typo-squatting."
Typo domain names are domain names that are similar to well-known domains and potentially generate substantial traffic when web users mis-type a domain name. For example, users who are trying to access the hugely popular website CraigsList.com (aka CraigsList.org) may type in a domain such as craigslits.com, craigdlist.com, or crsigslist.com — some of tomorrow's deleting domain names.
In "The Typo Millionaires," Paul Boutin of Slate magazine reports that "various studies have estimated that 10 percent to 20 percent of all hand-entered URLs are mistyped."
While a generic typo name is usually fair game, you can find yourself in hot water for registering a domain name that is similar to a registered trademark name. In August, 2006 Microsoft filed more than 100 lawsuits against entities who had registered domain names with Microsoft trademarked terms in them, under the 1999 Anticybersquatting Consumer Protection Act. The act allows for fines of up to $100,000 for cybersquatters.
The problem with using typo-domains is not from using the same or similar domain name per se, but from using a confusingly similar name that competes with the trademark holder. See the ToshibaToner.com trademark case as an example.
In general, we've found varying success in the use of typo domain names. Succesfully generating revenue from a typo domain name depends on how well you can offer what the end user is ultimately looking for. In other words, a domain name like playestion will do well for you if you can get the domain name to offer ads for the Sony Playstation than it would if the domain just showed a generic landing page.
And some typo domains have recently sold for a lot of money. Earlier this year mortage.com sold for $242,400, cicuitcity.com for $20,250, myspac.com for $31,600, and orker.com for $155,000. Personally, I would stay away from trademark-related domains like mysapc.com and cicuitcity.com.
You can monetize typo domains by using a domain parking service. See "How to Monetize Your Domain Name Portfolio" for more information on domain parking.
